Michael P. Smith


Overview and Experience

Michael is an associate attorney at Bonya, Gazza & DeGory, LLP. He concentrates his practice primarily in the area of energy law, with a particular emphasis on oil and gas title certification. In addition, Michael regularly represents landlords in landlord-tenant disputes. He has experience drafting leases and other contracts, including sales agreements.

Michael does pro bono work for petitioners seeking Protection From Abuse orders in Indiana County.

In his oil and gas work, Michael represents clients in property ownership and commercial leasing. His focus and experience is on preparing title opinions for clients that provide clear analysis of any issues with title to property and detailed recommendations as to resolving such problems. Examples of the kinds of issues that arise in this field include various liens, sheriff's and tax sales, missing estate records, competing claims of ownership, incorrect property descriptions, and many others.

In addition, Michael has experience representing businesses and individuals in civil litigation and other general practice areas of law in Indiana County and surrounding areas. Michael’s experience includes:

Education and Past Experience

Michael earned his J.D. in 2013 from University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. During law school, he participated in the Law Review, for which he served as Executive Editor during his final year. During law school, he worked for Judge Nora Barry Fischer of the United States District Court, Western District of Pennsylvania, providing research support and aiding in drafting opinions and orders.

Prior to law school, Michael obtained a B.A in History and a B.A. in Political Science at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.


Michael is a native of Munhall, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Serra Catholic High School in 2006. He currently resides in Blairsville, Pennsylvania.
