Erin N. Rice Petrillo


Overview and Experience

While general in nature, Erin’s practice is mainly in the areas of corporate and business law, real estate and natural resource law (coal, oil and natural gas), and she enjoys representing a diverse range of clients.

Prior to joining Bonya, Gazza & DeGory, LLP, in 2010, Erin practiced with a Pittsburgh-based law firm that concentrated in banking law.

Areas of Practice

Erin focuses her practice in corporate and business law, including representation of large corporations, municipal corporations and newly formed entities.  Erin provides counsel from the beginning stages of a business’s formation, through its existence and guides clients through the process of the winding up of a business at the end of its lifecycle.  Erin enjoys assisting clients in all stages of their business and helping clients to maintain limited liability through their choice of entity and actions.

Some representative matters include:

  • Organizing corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships, including establishing practices for and assisting with ongoing internal governance
  • Providing ongoing counsel to corporate clients in negotiating and reviewing contracts with material suppliers and contractors
  • Representing a municipal authority and application of Pennsylvania’s Municipality Authorities Act, obtaining funding for various projects performed by the authority including easement and real property interest acquisitions and title review
  • Representation of a newly formed entity in an acquisition and financing relating to a local personal care home
  • Representation of a non-profit corporation in connection with multi-million dollar real estate development project, including “right to know law” issues

Erin has experience in handling complex real estate matters.  Erin’s real estate practice began assisting individuals in the sale and purchase of residential real estate and grew to the representation of commercial clients in complex real estate transactions.  Erin still enjoys helping clients with their residential real estate purchases and sales.   

Representative real estate transactions include the following matters:

  • Representation of a common carrier railroad in numerous property acquisitions and sales, including like kind exchanges and projects in connection with a local development authority
  • Representation of clients in several multi-lease and permit acquisition transactions, including road bonding issues and estoppel certificates
  • Representation of a non-profit corporation in connection with multi-million dollar real estate development project
  • Representation of individuals and businesses in the sale and purchase of residential and commercial properties

Erin has experience in counseling oil, gas and coal companies in matters relating to leasing, land use, exploration and development.  Erin’s practice focuses on assisting these companies in pursing development opportunities and includes title examination and curative work. 

Erin’s experience includes:

  • Representation of energy companies in mergers and acquisitions
  • Reviewing and certifying titles to oil and gas and coal for leasing and development throughout Pennsylvania and conducting curative work, including issues relating to the Dormant Oil and Gas Act
  • Advising energy companies on contract and lease negotiations, real property issues and supply chain issues

  • U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania

Erin is a member of the Indiana County Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Association, including the Business Law and Environmental and Energy Law sections of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. 


Erin graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and the Katz Graduate School of Business in 2008 with a J.D. and M.B.A.  While in law school, Erin served as an associate editor of The Journal of Law and Commerce.  During her time at Katz, Erin concentrated her studies in finance, specifically the areas of corporate finance and valuation.

Erin graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of South Carolina with a dual major in International Business and Finance, earning a B.S. in 2005.  While at the USC, Erin was a member of the International Affairs Executive Board.


Erin is a native of Indiana, Pennsylvania and graduated from the Indiana Area Senior High School in 2001.  She lives in Indiana with her husband and two daughters.  In her free time, Erin enjoys horseback riding, sewing and reading.
